Bay Area Huskers E-News 12/8/11

Hey Bay Area Husker Fans!

Hard to believe yesterday was the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on that fateful Sunday morning.  If you know anyone who served in WWII, and especially anyone that survived the attack that brought the U.S. into the war, please take the time to thank them for their service.  See the piece below from a local radio station which includes a unique link to the NBC radio broadcast that was the first news of the event.

Wow!  I guess we have to thank Southern Miss’s whooping of Houston that let Michigan in the back door for a BCS berth in the Sugar Bowl.  This then allowed us to get the nod for the Capital One Bowl which is probably the most prestigious (and best paying) bowl outside of the BCS bowls.  The total payout for the two schools is around $4.6M vs. only around $3.5 for the Outback Bowl (on at the same time as our game).  There is a link below to the ESPN website with all of the bowl game schedules.

The Volleyball team lost a heartbreaker in the second round of the NCAA tourney with a loss to unseeded K-State.  Tough end to a great season.  See the article below for more info.

There is a bunch of Alumni Bowl Game travel package info below for anyone interested in heading to Orlando to watch the Huskers play on January 2nd…probably a big migration for this one with all the other attractions Orlando has to offer vacationing Husker fans.

I’ve added a part of (and the link to) a great Smithsonian magazine article written about Lincoln and Nebraska for those that may have missed it the first time I sent it.  And there is a great Christmas Carols website at the end of the email that is fun to play with this time of year (thanks Sheri)!  Enjoy the rest of the reading below.

Go Big Red (White and Blue),
Carl

Seventy years ago today, the United States was thrust into World War II when aircrafts from the Empire of Japan attacked United States forces stationed at Pearl Harbor. The attack, which started at 7:55am on December 7, 1941, sunk nine U.S. battleships and damaged twenty-one others, three of which would be irreparable. The overall death toll reached 2,350 people, including 68 civilians; 1,178 more were injured in the attacks.
On this anniversary, we here at KSFO hope you will take a moment to remember those who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor and all of the others from the "Greatest Generation" who fought in WWII. Click here to hear the first radio report of the attack from our friends at the Modesto Radio Museum.

NU TO TAKE ON SOUTH CAROLINA IN CAPITAL ONE BOWL…

Nebraska will make its 48th all-time bowl appearance and its second appearance in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 2 when Nebraska takes on South Carolina at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

The game against the 10-2 Gamecocks is the Huskers' fourth meeting all-time with South Carolina, and the first postseason meeting between the schools. Nebraska holds a 3-0 edge in the series, most recently winning a home-and-home series in 1986 and 1987. The 9-3 Huskers are making their fourth straight bowl trip under Head Coach Bo Pelini and Nebraska's 48 bowl appearances rank in a tie for the fourth-most of any school in the country.

Kickoff for the 2012 Capital One Bowl is set for 10 a.m. PST on Jan. 2. ESPN will provide the telecast to a national audience.

The Huskers enter the postseason ranked 21st in the Associated Press Poll and 20th in the USA Today Coaches poll. Nebraska's nine victories marked its fourth straight nine-win season under Pelini, and the Huskers are one of just eight programs with four straight nine-win seasons. A victory in the Capital One Bowl would give Nebraska three consecutive 10-win seasons for the first time since 1999 to 2001.

"We are pleased to earn the invitation to the Capital One Bowl in Orlando," Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini said. "Outside of the BCS, the Capital One Bowl is arguably the top bowl game out there. Our team has battled through a lot this year to reach this point, and we look forward to the opportunity to earn a 10th win this season. South Carolina has an outstanding football team, and we know they will present a big challenge for our football team."

South Carolina comes into the Capital One Bowl with a 10-2 record, including a 6-2 mark in the SEC, and is ranked 10th in the AP Poll and No. 9 by the coaches. The Gamecocks' only losses this season were by three points to defending national champion Auburn and on the road at Arkansas. South Carolina's 10-win season is just the second in Gamecock school history, joining a 10-2 campaign in 1984.

Steve Spurrier is in his seventh season as South Carolina's Head Coach and he has compiled a 54-35 record with the Gamecocks. The Capital One Bowl will be the 17th bowl appearance in South Carolina's history, and the Gamecocks have a 4-12 record in postseason play.

Nebraska will receive an allotment of 12,500 tickets for the Capital One Bowl. Tickets will go on sale to the general public at Huskers.com, beginning at 9 p.m. CST on Sunday night. Capacity at Citrus Bowl Stadium is 65,438.

Tickets for the game are $87 and Husker fans may also place ticket orders in person or by phone through the Athletic Ticket Office beginning Monday morning. The ticket office is located in the Stadium Drive Parking Garage and can be reached by calling 1-800-8-BIG-RED.

Other Nebraska Bowl Notes

--Nebraska has a 24-23 record in bowl games. The Huskers have won 10 of their last 15 bowl games and four of their past six since 2003. Nebraska is 3-1 in bowl games with Pelini as head coach, including his victory as interim head coach in the 2003 Alamo Bowl.

--This year's game will be Nebraska's 19th bowl game in the state of Florida, and its second appearance in the Capital One (Citrus) Bowl. Nebraska faced Georgia Tech in the 1991 Citrus Bowl. Nebraska has also made 16 appearances in the Orange Bowl and most recently played in a Florida Bowl game, winning the Gator Bowl matchup with Clemson following the 2008 season. Nebraska is 8-10 in bowl games in Florida.

--This will mark Nebraska's first matchup with the SEC in a bowl game since a 17-14 loss to Auburn in the 2007 Cotton Bowl. Nebraska is 12-5 all-time against SEC opponents in bowl games, but has lost its last two, including a 2002 loss to Ole Miss in the Independence Bowl. Prior to that, Nebraska won 11 straight bowl games against SEC opponents from 1966 to 1999.

--Nine of Nebraska's 12 opponents in 2011 are appearing in bowl games, including seven of eight Big Ten Conference opponents. Looking ahead, the 2012 schedule features 10 opponents that are playing in a bowl game this season.

--The matchup with No. 10 South Carolina represents the highest ranked team Nebraska has faced in a bowl game since taking on No. 10 Auburn in the 2007 Cotton Bowl.

DAVID NAMED ALL-AMERICAN…

Nebraska senior linebacker Lavonte David has joined elite company in Cornhusker history, being named a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association on Monday.

The 6-1, 225-pound David has led Nebraska in tackles the past two seasons and become one of the top five tacklers in school history despite playing just two seasons as a Husker. David is the 96th first-team All-American in Nebraska history, and when including 14 two-time selections, David gives Nebraska 110 all-time first-team All-America picks.

David is joined at linebacker by Georgia sophomore Jarvis Jones and Alabama junior Dont'a Hightower. David is one of six Big Ten players named to the AFCA All-America team and gives Nebraska an AFCA first-team selection for the third consecutive year, joining Ndamukong Suh in 2009 and Prince Amukamara in 2010.

Overall, Nebraska has had a total of 46 players earn 51 overall first-team AFCA All-America honors.
A finalist for the Butkus Award and the winner of Big Ten Linebacker-of-the-Year honors, David finished the regular season with a team-leading 122 tackles. He had five games with double-figure tackle totals, including four in Big Ten play. David also led Nebraska with two interceptions, two fumbles caused, two fumble recoveries and 11 tackles for loss, while ranking second on the team with 3.5 sacks.

David has led Nebraska in tackles seven times in 2011, and 14 times in 26 career games at Nebraska. His 274 career tackles are fifth in school history, while his 122 tackles this season rank 10th on NU's single-season list. Last season, David registered a school-record 152 tackles and was a second-team All-America pick by the Associated Press.

NEBRASKA STUDENT-ATHLETES HONORED AS FALL ACADEMIC ALL-BIG TEN SELECTIONS…

A total of 55 Nebraska student-athletes were recognized on Wednesday as Academic All-Big Ten recipients. The list of honored Nebraska student-athletes includes 27 football players, 12 women's soccer student-athletes, 10 members of the Huskers' cross country teams and six volleyball players.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Among the total group of 786 student-athletes honored by the Big Ten Conference, at least 14 of those student-athletes have maintained unblemished cumulative grade-point averages. Nebraska boasts three of those student-athletes in Sean Fisher (Jr., Football, Pre-Medicine/Business Administration), Katie White (Sr., Cross Country, Nutrition Science) and Amy Swearer (So., Soccer, Criminology & Criminal Justice). Fisher was one of four football student-athletes with a perfect GPA, White was one of three women's cross country athletes and Swearer one of three women's soccer student-athletes in that elite group.

Fisher leads a group of 27 members of Coach Bo Pelini's football team who received the honor. Among that group, 11 football student-athletes have received multiple academic all-conference recognition between the Big Ten and Big 12 Conferences. Senior defensive back Lance Thorell earned academic all-conference honors for the fourth consecutive year, including first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2008 and second-team honors in both 2009 and 2010.

Football student-athletes who earned academic all-conference honors for a third time included junior defensive back Justin Blatchford, senior defensive back Austin Cassidy, junior tight end Ben Cotton, senior offensive tackle Marcel Jones, senior fullback Tyler Legate and senior tight end Jay Martin. Players earning academic all-conference honors for a second time included Fisher, junior I-back Rex Burkhead, junior linebacker Will Compton and senior linebacker Jim Ebke.

Overall, Nebraska's 27 Academic All-Big Ten football selections were second in the conference, trailing only Northwestern. The Academic All-Big Ten recognition for the football student-athletes continues an impressive run of academic success for Pelini's program. This summer, the cumulative grade-point average for the entire team surpassed 3.0 for the first time since the figure began being tracked in the 1980s.

The Nebraska soccer team placed 12 student-athletes on the 2011 Fall Academic All-Big Ten list. Swearer led the way for Head Coach John Walker's squad, as the Lincoln native was one of three Nebraska student-athletes honored with a 4.0 GPA. The 2011 senior class continued its success in the classroom as Michaella Fulmer, Katie Goetzmann and Blair Slapper each earned their fourth career academic all-conference accolade after each earing three awards from the Big 12 Conference.

Success in the classroom has always been a part of the soccer program, as the team produced 119 academic All-Big 12 honors while members of the Big 12 Conference from 1996-2010.

John Cook's Nebraska volleyball program had six student-athletes honored as All-Big Ten selections. The contingent was led by senior Jordan Wilberger, as she notched the third academic all-conference honors of her career. Junior Gina Mancuso earned the honors for the second time, while senior Brigette Root, junior Lauren Cook and sophomores Morgan Broekhuis and Hayley Thramer all notched all-conference academic honors for the first time.

Jay Dirksen's cross country squad saw 10 student-athletes honored. White led the group as one of 14 student-athletes who boasted a cumulative 4.0 GPA. She is a three-time academic all-conference honoree. Senior Ashley Miller earned academic all-conference honors for the fourth time in her career, while seniors Jesse Adams, Jessica Furlan and Erica Hamik were included for the third time. Student-athletes earning academic all-conference honors for the second time include junior Tommy Brinn and senior Brad Doering.

The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the winter and spring seasons and will present the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution.

Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school. The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award was established by conference Faculty Representatives as an addition to the conference's Academic All-Big Ten program.

HUSKERS’ SEASON ENDS IN HEARTBREAKING FASHION…

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska volleyball team saw its season end shorter than it has in 18 seasons, while Kansas State advanced as far as it ever has in the NCAA Tournament, as the unseeded Wildcats upset the second-seeded Huskers, 3-2, on Friday night in second-round action in front of 4,161 fans at the NU Coliseum.

Kansas State (22-10) handed Nebraska its first postseason home loss since 2002 and only its third ever with a 25-22, 22-25, 31-29, 22-25, 15-11 victory. With the win, the Wildcats punched their ticket to the Honolulu Regional, advancing to an NCAA Regional for the third time in school history and for the first time since 2003.

For the Big Ten champion Huskers, their season ended short of a regional berth for the first time since 1993. Nebraska, which ended its season with a 25-5 record, had advanced to an NCAA Regional in each of the last 17 seasons, the longest active streak in the nation, nine longer than any other school.

In a match highlighted by its closeness, Kansas State ultimately never trailed in the fifth set, as its four-point margin of victory was the largest by either team in the match. The match's turning point came in the third set, with the match tied at 1-1. After rallying from a five-point deficit midway through the set, the Wildcats fought off three set points and took a 2-1 lead. Nebraska then won the fourth set, but was unable to stop the Wildcats in set five.

Kansas State hit .241 for the match, and the Wildcats saved their best for last, attacking at match-high .357 clip in the final set. Four players tallied double figures in kills, led by Kaitlynn Pelger's 22 kills on .314 hitting.

Lilla Porubek added 17 kills, Courtney Traxson had 14 and Alex Muff added 10. Four K-State players also posted at least 12 digs, including Pelger, who recorded a double-doubled. The Wildcats also out-blocked the Huskers, 13-10.

Nebraska finished with two more kills and a better attacking percentage than K-State, hitting .262 for the match. The Huskers also out-dug the Wildcats, 89-81, but committed 11 service errors. Four Huskers finished with double-figure kills, led by Gina Mancuso, who finished with a career-high 25 kills. Morgan Broekhuis added 14 kills, Hannah Werth chipped in 13 and Jordan Wilberger had 11, one shy of her career high in her final match. Mancuso and Werth added 17 and 18 digs, respectively, to post double-doubles.

FOUR HUSKER VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS NAMED ALL-REGION…

Lincoln
- The Nebraska volleyball team had four players earn all-region honors on Tuesday from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Junior Gina Mancuso was named to the 14-member Mideast Region first-team, while sophomore Morgan Broekhuis, junior Lauren Cook and junior Hannah Werth were named honorable mention.

Mancuso, who was named a unanimous First-Team All-Big Ten pick,  has been key for the Husker offense and defense in 2011. As a junior, the Omaha, Neb., native led Nebraska in kills with a total of 407 and an average of 3.60 kills per set and 2.66 digs per set. She ranked in the top ten in the conference in kills for the entire season. Mancuso notched at least 10 kills in 25 matches this season, while posting a career-high of 24 kills against Colorado State. She was also named the Big Ten Player-of-the-Week two times in 2011.

She tabbed at least 10 kills in 19 matches and a hitting percentage of .247. She recorded a total of 97 blocks in 2011, while hitting at least .300 in eight matches this season, including a season-best .692 against Jackson State. She tabbed a career-high 22 kills at Michigan on Oct. 1.

Cook put together a strong season in her first full year as a starter. She averaged 11.03 assists per set, .49 kills and 2.79 digs per set. She ranked fourth in the league in assists, while notching a team-best 18 double-doubles (assists-digs). Cook helped Nebraska hit .300 or better in 10 matches, including a season-high .438 against Jackson State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. She totaled 50 or more assists in seven matches, including a career-high 62 assists against Kansas State.

Werth had an outstanding junior season, with 2.80 kills per set and 3.11 digs per set. She ranked second on the team in total digs with 348 on the year. Werth tabbed at least 10 kills in 18 matches, while notching at least 10 digs in 19 matches. OMAHA WORLD HERALD ARTICLES…
No. 14 Wisconsin comes to the Devaney Center in 19 days to welcome Nebraska into the Big Ten men's basketball family. Think the Badgers will be impressed by NU's 51-50, white-knuckle win Wednesday night over Florida Gulf Coast? The Huskers needed Dylan Talley's 10-foot jumper with 10.4 seconds left to secure the victory over the Fort Myers, Fla., school that didn't exist until 1997 and is in its first season of full Division I status.

It was unseasonably quiet around the Nebraska volleyball offices this week. Typically this has been the week where the Huskers prepared for regional-round opponents standing between them and the final four, while simultaneously trying to balance the chaos of impending finals. But this year's team can prep for final exams in peace. Not that they're excited about it.

Tim Beck had the Kyler Reed trick up his sleeve all season. He didn't pull it out often. When Nebraska's offensive coordinator did in a 20-7 win Nov. 25 against Iowa, Reed reminded Husker fans what they've been missing. On third-and-3 in the final minute of the first half, Taylor Martinez faked a handoff to Rex Burkhead out of the pistol formation. Then, almost without looking, he flung a pass up the middle to an open Reed.

Creighton continued its climb up the rankings Monday, landing in the Associated Press top 25 for the first time this season and moving up five spots in the coaches' poll. The 7-0 Bluejays received 352 points in the AP voting, placing them 19th. It was Creighton's first ranking in the AP poll since being 20th the week of Nov. 13, 2006. It also was the highest since also being ranked 19th in the preseason poll released on Nov. 6, 2006.

The defensive play that may have prevented South Carolina's season from coming unhinged began up front, even though the highlights and replays all focused on the diving interception. Mississippi State was trailing by two points late in the Oct. 15 matchup and its offense was driving, already inside Gamecocks' territory, one first down away from field-goal position.

A cooperative founded 90 years ago by five Sioux City-area beekeepers now has more than 300 producers and processes about 35 million pounds of raw honey each year.
Get to central Florida and the rest is a piece of cake, a UNO prof tells fans.

Huskers head to Capital One Bowl

Steve Spurrier. South Carolina’s stingy defense. And that vaunted SEC speed. That’s what awaits Nebraska’s football team in the Jan. 2 Capital One Bowl. The 10-2 Gamecocks, No. 9 in the final BCS standings, will play the 9-3 and No. 21 Huskers at noon CST in Orlando, Fla.

They will be rivals in the Big Ten Conference, but Sam Cotton and Drew Ott ended their high school careers on the same team — the 91st World-Herald All-Nebraska football team, on which they are the honorary captains. Cotton, who was a two-way starter as Lincoln Southeast won the Class A championship, is the only in-state player known to be a Nebraska commitment.

MarketWatch's Jon Friedman wrote about Warren Buffett's decision to buy the Omaha World-Herald Co. through Berkshire Hathaway Inc., asking, "What does Buffett, not so long ago an outspoken pessimist on the subject of the newspaper industry's growth prospects, see in a small, Midwestern chain? ... Owning a newspaper can be a trophy for the super rich. Even with the best of intentions, an investment in the media doesn't always pay."

GREAT SMITHSONIAN ARTICLE ABOUT THE HOMELAND…

I think I had this in a previous email, but here is an excerpt from the article again for those that didn’t see it the first time…

LINCOLN NEBRASKA: HOME ON THE PRARIE
The college city's big sky and endless farmland gave this New Yorker some fresh perspective

  • By Meghan Daum
  • Smithsonian magazine, November 2011

In Nebraska, storms are a violence from which no amount of caution or privilege can protect you. Their warnings crawl across television screens in every season.

The thing you have to understand about Lincoln is that it falls under the radar. Unless you’re from Nebraska—or possibly South Dakota or Iowa—it’s probably not a place you’d think of visiting, much less moving to. No matter how unaffordable life becomes in Brooklyn or Portland or Austin, Lincoln is unlikely to turn up on a list of “unexpected hipster destinations.” But, being extremely unhip, I moved there anyway. In 1999, when I was 29, I traded New York City for it and stayed nearly four years. This was a strange thing to do, and it perplexed a lot of people, particularly because I did not, contrary to some assumptions, go there for school or a guy or because I was in the witness protection program. As a result, there’s a part of me that feels like an impostor whenever I write or even talk about Lincoln. I’m not from there, I don’t live there now, and when I did live there, I occupied an often awkward middle ground between guest and resident. By this I mean that even though I lived in a house and had friends and a relationship and a book club and a dog, I was always regarded as “the person who moved here from New York for no particular reason.” In Nebraska that translates loosely into “deeply weird person.”

CHRISTMAS CAROLS FROM THE CHIN DUO! (Thanks Sheri!)

A perennial favorite!
 MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

I remember this from last year - but it's fun to see it and hear these silly guys again.
Type in any Christmas song and see what the little puppets do. Also, type in any non-Christmas song (i.e., Happy Birthday) and you'll get a kick out of the response.  I typed in Jingle Bell Rock and they forgot the words half way through and it is so funny.
